A Murphy bed, also called a wall bed, pull down bed, or fold-down bed is a bed that is hinged on one end to store vertically against the wall, or inside of a closet or cabinet.
A Murphy bed, also called a wall bed, pull down bed, or fold-down bed is a bed that is hinged on one end to store vertically against the wall, or inside of a closet or cabinet.
The bed is named for William Lawrence Murphy, who patented the system in the early 1900’s. According to legend, he was wooing an opera singer, but living in a one-room apartment in San Francisco, and the moral code of the time frowned upon a woman entering a man’s bedroom. Murphy’s invention converted his bedroom into a parlor, enabling him to entertain his future wife.
Since traditional beds can occupy as much as 60 percent of the floor space in a room, wall beds are used for space-saving purposes. They are popular where floor space is limited, such as small homes, apartments, hotels, mobile homes and college dorms. Wall beds have seen a resurgence in popularity in the early 2010s due to the weak economy, causing children to move back in with their parents and families choosing to renovate rather than relocate.
As people in metropolitan areas move into studio apartments, a wall bed is the logical choice for a space efficient comfortable night sleep. Homeowners are converting bedrooms to dens, craft rooms or home offices with the help of an entire wall bed system.
Since the first model was introduced, several other variations and designs have been developed, such as wall beds mounted sideways, Murphy bunk beds, wall beds with tables or desks that fold down, and models with sofas and shelving solutions. Come into our show room and let us help you design the wall bed system that can convert any room in your home into a multi-purpose solution.
Custom designs can incorporate sizes from a child’s twin to a king-sized bed to provide you with a “room within a room”.
Make your bed then put it away. Now you don’t have to choose between a dedicated home office or a guestroom, but rather you can combine both into one room. Economize on valuable floor space.
Design the craft room or sewing room you’ve always wanted. Create a special space for scrapbooking, giftwrapping, coin or stamp collecting, yoga, or just a zen place to relax and meditate. Whatever it is by day, whether it be an office, craft room, hobby room, TV room or children’s playroom, it becomes a restful bedroom by night.
You know the old saying. Even the most cherished loved ones can wear out their welcome by overstaying their visit. Create a multipurpose guest room that does not invite relatives to want to move in, but rather offer an intelligent blend of storage, workspace and comfortable sleeping quarters. Accommodate out-of-town guests, grown kids visiting from college, grandkids, or even a parent in need of a temporary place to stay.
For apartment dwellers, our wall bed systems can be relocated to another room or taken with you if you move. We offer vertical or horizontal models to accommodate twin, full/double, queen or king size mattresses. By accessorizing your wall bed system with crown molding, light kits, attractive doors and drawers, shelving units, night stands, and other custom details, you will be able to offer noble hospitality to your overnight guests.
The real solution is to schedule a consultation with one of our expert designers who will open up all the possibilities available to you in your particular space, and there’s no better time than now to get started.
